Damp Proofing Project Completed in Bexhill-on-Sea

At Kennedy Damp Proofing, every successful damp proofing project starts with a thorough survey and professional diagnosis. This recent project in Bexhill-on-Sea is a great example of why identifying the true cause of damp is essential before any remedial work begins.

Initial Survey and Diagnosis

Following our comprehensive damp survey, we identified that the property’s internal damp proof course had failed, allowing moisture to rise through the walls.

As part of our investigation, we also carried out a cavity wall inspection to ensure there were no blockages or debris causing moisture to bridge the cavity. Fortunately, the cavity was completely clear, meaning there was no need for costly cavity clearance works.

Preparing the Property

Before starting the damp proofing treatment, we carefully removed all radiators, skirting boards and electrical socket fronts to allow us to work safely and achieve the highest standard of finish.

We then removed all contaminated plaster to a height of approximately one metre, exposing the masonry and allowing us to inspect the wall construction thoroughly.

During this process, we discovered another issue around the rear door reveals. Previous contractors had installed plasterboard directly onto the reveals without fitting cavity wall closers. This creates a significant cold bridge, allowing the internal surface to become much colder than the surrounding walls. Cold surfaces naturally attract condensation, often resulting in persistent mould growth.

To rectify this correctly, we installed new cavity wall closers before continuing with the damp proofing works.

Damp Proofing Treatment

Once the walls had been fully prepared, we injected a professional chemical damp proof course into the lowest visible mortar joint throughout all affected areas.

Following the installation of the new damp proof course, we applied our 3mm damp proof membrane system to create a durable waterproof barrier between the masonry and the new wall finish.

The property required two different finishing methods due to the condition of the existing walls.

In the living room, the original plaster was extremely thin, making plasterboard unsuitable. Instead, we applied a strong 3:1 sand and cement render incorporating a high-performance waterproofing and salt-inhibiting additive to protect against residual moisture and salt contamination.

In the bedroom, where the existing wall depth allowed, we installed new plasterboard over the damp proof membrane to achieve a smooth and consistent finish.

Finishing the Project

After the base coats had fully cured, we applied two coats of finishing plaster to create a perfectly smooth surface ready for decoration.

We then reinstated all radiators, electrical sockets and skirting boards before allowing the walls to dry fully.

Once the drying process was complete, the property was professionally decorated, producing the clean, fresh finish shown in the photographs.
